Description:
The ability of silica to substitute and reproduce other materials is quite amazing. This is why they are given names that invoke more what has been reproduced than what it really is. Thus, this type of specimen is often called fossil coral, when in reality it is chalcedony which has substituted, with great precision, a pre-existing fossil coral formed by calcium carbonate, a process know as pseudomorphing.
